Antepavilion Interactive Art Beacon

The Interactive Art Beacon offers a new interpretation of the traditional lighthouse based on parametric modelling, digital fabrication and an interactive platform.

In comparison to the traditional lighthouse, the vertical circulation is exposed and creates a complex facade allowing a variety of light reflections and shadows both during the day and at night. As a consequence, the Interactive Art Beacon receives its unique appearance serving as a landmark of the Wharf complex.

The vertical circulation leads the people up to the Art Ball which people can experience from the inside by watching a projected art show. Through its accessibility, it also serves as a watchtower. Furthermore, the art show can be experienced from the canal and the surrounding streets. The projected art shows are chosen from cloud storage where local artists can upload their works which gives the Art Beacon its interactive component.
The modular structure, designed by parametric tools, is made of plywood cut by a CNC machine for fast fabrication.
In order to stabilize the modular units, horizontal connectors are used that give the beacon a light and dynamic appearance.
The tin railing contrasts with the material and colour of the main structure which it is anchored to. This contrast emphasizes the spiral movement of the beacon.

Due to its unique structure, its interactivity and its display of local arts,, the Interactive Art Beacon demonstrates a balance between art and architecture serving as a landmark for the surrounding area.
